A Demon, a Host Club, and a Reader: Kaoru pt.1

"Hikaru! It's not...well it is. I mean I can explain." Kaoru stuttered.

Hikaru continued to stare at you and his twin, dumbfounded. His mouth parted just slightly. He let the door close behind him.

"Please don't tell Ciel..." you mumbled quietly. Feeling a wave a guilt wash over you.

Hikaru took a step forward and looked as if he were ready to yell. Before he could take another, Kaoru pushed you behind him and stood tall. Both of you were surprised by his action. Hikaru stared at his brother with wide eyes....then he looked down with balled fists then stomped back out the door.

In the silence, Kaoru shrunk a bit. "I....I don't think I've ever done that." he whispered to himself.

"What?" you asked.

"Defied him"

Still confused, you turned him to face you. "Look, I'm sorry I've made a mess here...I'll um...take Ciel and go home now. We can talk later." You made your way to the door quickly and shut it behind you, leaving Kaoru in the room by himself. Part of you wished he open it backup and pull you into another kiss.

No no. Stop. This is messy. What about Ciel? You knew ever since you started living with him that he had a crush on you. It's been pretty evident now a days....but do you feel the same? These thoughts roamed your head as you and Ciel were driving home. Ciel talked about the new game Hikaru showed him all day and how he was impressed with his company goals.

You made a small smile. Ciel likes it here. He’s made so many friends. Will you ruin it?

When the two of you arrived home, your head ached. Are you really into Kaoru?

“What’s wrong?” Ciel asked as he noticed you trailing behind him.

You looked up  and faked a smile. “Nothing.”

He looked at you with curiosity and studied your body trying to figure out what you’re hiding. He’s known you for so long you know he knows something is up. He stared waiting for you to fess up.

“Um….I’m going to go to bed.” you mumbled and pushed pass him.

“What? Wait! What’s wrong?” he called after you.
You just walked away before he could stop you, and perhaps change your mind.

As you closed the door to your room you got a text message.

K: Hey. Are you okay?

It was Kaoru. You smiled and replied.

R: Yeah. I’m fine. You?

K: Fine. Hikaru seems upset

R: Sorry about that.

K: It’s fine. Worth it

You laughed a bit and snuggled into bed to continue the conversation.

R: So...what now?

K: I think we should keep this on the down low.
I talked to Hikaru and he said he’ll keep it quiet.
I don’t know about everyone else.

R: This? You asked being cheeky.
There is a this?

K: I’ll prove it.

R: Oh?

K: Friday after school. Meet me at 6

You bit your lip to keep your smile to a minimum. Maybe he’s right. Let’s see if there is a something first before you make any decisions.

The week went by quickly and yet so slowly. You and Kaoru tried to keep your staring and smirks to a minimum. He’d find any chance to stand next to you are somehow brush his hand across yours and everytime he did you tried to hide a blush. He’d also wink at you while Hikaru was looking away, making you laugh to yourself.

During Host Club, the day dragged on, watching Kaoru from a distance seemed to take up most of your time. Ciel was also off hosting a large group of girls.

“Slow today?” A deep voice behind you asked.

“Oh...yeah. How are you, Kyoya?” you asked as you pretended to be busy making some more tea.

“Oh just fine. Your master here is bringing in quite a good amount of customers.” he adjusted his glasses with a small smirk and scribbled something down in his black notebook.

“That’s good. I’m glad you’re benefiting from our presence.” you said keeping your back to him, trying to worm your way out of the awkward conversation.

“You do know we’re keeping a very careful eye on you.”

You tensed. “Oh?”

“Just as a precaution. I can’t have you jeopardizing anyone of our hosts. Including Kaoru. Just so you know, all of our families have an abundance and variety of resources. So if you try anything”, He adjusted his glasses again, “we’ll have you suffer the proper consequences.” a gleam off his glasses made you shudder on the inside.

“You don’t have to worry, or threaten me.” you said acting calm. “My only goal is to make sure Ciel is well and happy….He’s seemed to find that here.” You looked up towards Ciel. This is the first time he’s ever made friends other than you. He’s changed so much.

“Wait, Kaoru?” you asked, unaware he knew.

“You know, for someone like you, you’re not very sly in hiding it.”

You blushed. “Sorry about that. Please don’t tell anyone.”

“As if they all don’t already know.”

“Yeah, _____, it’s okay. We all support you.” Honey chimed in with Mori right behind him giving an approving nod.

“What!” you exclaimed.

“Oh please, you guys are so obvious!” Haruhi added coming over and placing a hand on your shoulder.

The customers in the host club grew silent and all attention was on you.

You awkwardly made eye contact with Kaoru from across the room. His face seemed surprised and he looked back at his brother hoping for an explanation.

Hikaru just shrugged. “I didn’t need to tell anyone. You guys did that all by yourself.” he said sounding nonchalant.

Now all the girls started whispering.

“Wow I’m so jealous.”

“But Kaoru looks really happy.”

“I wish it were me!”

“They look so nice together.”

“What about the twins though?”

“Poor Hikaru!”

“Poor Ciel!”

You and Kaoru looked to the ground, hiding your blush.

“My little girl is all grown up!” Tamaki shouted after teleporting across the room to give you a large hug.

“So why is she allowed to grow up and not Haruhi, boss?” Hikaru prodded as he came over to grab his shoulder.

“Yeah”, Kaoru chimed in, “what’s the motivation there?”

Tamaki looked stunned to stone for a moment, then began to pace around murmuring and contemplating his life choices.

“Yeah Tamaki-senpai, why is she allowed to do anything she wants?” Haruhi grumbled, stabbing a figurative arrow in his back as she walked away

You turned away toward Ciel that was now staring in your direction. It seems like he didn’t know, he had that kind of expression on his face. But he didn't look surprised.

“Ciel?” You asked sitting next to him, “this alright? I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”

He said nothing, just pulled you into a hug and kissed your forehead. You hugged him back smiling into his chest. His face seemed a bit hurt, but you sensed it would be alright.

“If this is what you wish, so be it.” He stated quietly.

You smiled, as the host club was filled with high pitched squeals.

“Another sibling love?”

“Oh, the strength of true friendship!”

“What a loving family.”

“I thought they were together but this is so much better!”

Various voices said around the room.

The rest of host club and much of the week was about the same. Many whispers and giggles have been heard as you pass them through the hall. You and Kaoru were asked to play up the “secret flirting” but obvious enough for others to tell so the host club would generate more income.

You began to become numb to some of it. Kaoru would whisper a bit too close to your ear, lips brushing your face and any time you see each other in the hallway, you’d stare and pass a note. When lunch time came around you made an effort to eat off each other’s plates and not to successfully hide holding hands under the table. Eventually, you and Kaoru started to do these things naturally.

Somehow….Kyoya’s plan worked. The host club was overbooked the rest of the week, especially friday.

“So it tonight isn’t it?” One of your customers asked.

“What you’re talking about?” You smiled and faked a blush.

“Oh you know, your date!”

“Oh, haha yeah. That’s right. I cant believe its friday already.” You lied. You were so nervous.

“What are you going to wear?”

“Oh,” you said actually taken aback. “I don’t know.”

A crowed of gasps appeared after that. Then lots of squeals. Then...your were cornered. A gleam came out of their eyes as they towered over you. Makeover.

Oh god.

Well after host club ended, with paid overtime of course, the girls finally decided that you wear a pastel fit and flare dress, adorned with a matching necklace and bracelet. They combed your hair and added some mysterious products to make it oh so soft and bouncy. Now it came down to shoes….all heels of course.

“They should match the dress perfectly.”

“But statement pieces are so trendy.”

“Match the jewelry?”

“No her hair?”

Your fake smile at this point was starting to hurt your face. Whatever happened to a good pair of jeans and a t-shirt.

At that moment, the red-headed host pulled back the curtain. “Hey, ready for our date?” He looked stunned as a you walked over, grabbing one of the simplest heels the girls were offering you.

“Wow you look amazing?” He said as he looked to the side, faking hiding a blush.

“Doesn’t she look cute, Kaoru?” a girl asked.

“She really does,” he said and smiled.

You sighed and walked out of the dressing room hitting his shoulder in the process. You heard gasps behind you and noticed the redhead freeze.

“What’s wrong?”

“Are you changing your mind?”

“It’s okay to be nervous!”
They all whined.

You ignored them and walked over to the rest of the hosts. You stood in front of the other twin and said, “Im ready.”

Chaos….pure chaos happened behind you.

Kaoru smiled, “You look adorable”

Hikaru called from in front of the dressing room. “She’s good, Kaoru. I approve.”

Your eye twitched in annoyance. “Was it really necessary to play the which one is Hikaru game with me?”

He laughed, “Sorry It was the boss’s idea.”

You rolled your eyes and the two of you walked out of the school together.

So you asked finally alone, “Where are we going.” You tried not to make eye contact. Suddenly you got very shy.

His face turned a bright red “What do you think about a... um….” He was interrupted as the rest of the host club walked through you two.

“Are you guys coming? We’re going to the commoner farmer’s market” Hikaru shouted not looking back.

“Yeah it’s going to be so fun!” Honey said as he jumped onto Mori’s shoulders.

“It’ll be quite the learning experience. I heard that somehow they have such low prices at a high quality.” Kyoya stated walking past and scribbling in his notebook.

Tamaki was just simply chanting “Farmers market, farmer market!”

Haruhi, slumped over in defeat came up next to you. “I’m sorry. I tried….it’s too much to hope that they’d leave you alone. Trust me I know.”

“Come on Haruhi take us to the farmer’s market! Will there be pigs?” Tamaki asked.

She sighed and mumbled “damn rich people” before giving you a look of apology and walking off towards them.

Kaoru looked at you relieved. “I guess the farmer’s market is okay” he said as he was walking towards them.

Then it hit you. He didn’t have a plan.
